Rationale for the trial

Many people with bipolar disorder find that depressive symptoms are more disabling and more persistent than manic symptoms. Effective treatments are needed that:

  • provide safe, tolerable and rapid reduction of depressive  symptoms
  • do not induce manic symptoms in the short- term
  • maintain continued remission from depressive symptoms and freedom from  manic symptoms in the longer-term
